Request to see a business license and proof of insurance.”Scam 3: “I’ll need the money upfront…”“A conning contractor will tell you that he’ll need a percentage of the project cost upfront. He might tell you the reason is that he needs to order materials or rent supplies.“But once you pay him, he’ll disappear. Or he’ll do a poor job, thinking you can’t fire him because you’ve already paid him hundreds, or thousands.“How to protect yourself: Down payments are a standard practice, but should never be unreasonable. Check the rules in your state regarding down payment limits. Modern World History Cambodian Genocide Report Dead bodies are on the ground everywhere that you turn. The smell of filth and death choke your lungs as you wonder if tomorrow will be a better day. All your body feels is pain and emptiness. One might think this is how life was like for the Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide, but in reality this is how life was like for many Cambodians who were forced to face the harsh ruling of Pol Pot between 1975 and 1979. Between this time period the Cambodian genocide took place and about two million people were executed, raped, and harassed. But prior to this, Cambodia was ruled under the French for about ninety years. During World War II, Cambodia was taken over by China and Prince Norodom Sihanouk was pronounced king in 1941. However, in 1953 Cambodia gained their independence from France, but unfortunately that was taken away when Prime Minister Lon Nol was overthrown by a communist group called the â€Å"Khmer Rouge†. Pol Pot, the head of the Cambodian communist party, was the creator of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge began killing some officials that ran the government before them. The citizens were forced out of cites and had to live an Agrarian lifestyle. The soldiers forced millions of citizens to work as slaves digging canals and tending crops. Religion, education and all forms of self-expression were not allowed. The soldiers separated families and required children to work in mobile labor units. People who tried to disobey their authority took the risk of getting tortured or death from a hit to the head.   Pol Pot dreamed of a â€Å"self sufficient† country. This meant that Cambodia would provide for themself and would have no aid in doing so. Because this what was Pol Pot wanted for Cambodia, banks and forms of currency were destroyed. Telephone and postal services were abolished and the media was censored. This was also what the Khmer Rouge referred to as the â€Å"transitionà ¢â‚¬ . The â€Å"transition† required the entire country to dress in all government issued black attire. The genocide caused massive starvation and malnutrition to increase due to the fact that the Khmer Rouge was exporting available food to China to repay past debts. Working long hours and being given small rations of food never changed during the genocide. Because of this, death, starvation and disease became very common. The United States involvement in the Cambodian genocide remained the same as it was in the Rwandan genocide. They did nothing but send more than B-fifty-two bombing missions against Cambodia. Even though the United States did this, they still worried about other things that were going on at the time and they did not feel the need to sign the Genocide Convention because they did not feel obliged to contribute time, energy, or money to solving the conflict in Cambodia. The international response to this genocide was no different, but because the Khmer Rouge expelled all foreigners from Cambodia immediately after taking power, it was very impossible for the outside world to gain knowledge about the genocide. Still, most governments focused on their own issues while some people from certain networks tried to sneak Cambodians out of the country and to safety. This terror eventually came to an end when Vietnam invaded Cambodia and overthrew the Khmer Rouge on January 7, 1979. Utilizing guerilla tactics against the Vietnamese, the rest of the party flew west along the border of Thailand. For the next ten years, the Khmer Rouge fought the Vietnamese. During this time period, thousands of Cambodians and refugees were dying due to the lack of food and medical care. But in 1989, Vietnam officially withdrew their troops and a peace agreement was officially established between both opposing parties. Soon in 1997, Pol Pot was found and put under house arrest, but he eventually passed away in his sleep on April 15, 1998 at seventy two years old due to a heart failure. But in the most recent news, the two members of the Khmer Rouge still living were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity. Today, survivors are still traumatized by the events that took place during the Cambodian genocide. Survivors still mourn the death of their loved ones but they still speak out about their experiences. A survivor named, Chan Pay, was one of the woman that were sexually assaulted by Pol Pot. Chan converses about how Pol Pot forced her to marry him but she always refused. She describes about how Pol Pot would chain her up and rape her until she was unconscious day after day. She goes on to explain how he would place bullets into her private parts and insert his genital into her mouth until she regained consciousness. Pak Savorn, another survivor, even talks about how she witnessed her whole family die on the killing fields. She describes how she climbed out of a grave with her dead family on her. She continues to explain how she saw â€Å"worms coming out the noses, ears and mouths of dead people†. A man named, Kim So, another survivor of the Cambodian genocide discusses about h ow sad and depressed he feels talking about his past experiences. He describes about how the Cambodian genocide made him feel â€Å"hopeless because of [his] disability† and that he has â€Å"no value to live in this world†. The Genocide Convention also known as the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crime of Genocide, was an international tool that was used to assort genocide as a crime under international law. It was established by the General Assembly on December 9, 1948. Article II on the convention states the definition of genocide as any of the following: committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, like: Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. So clearly, the Cambodian Genocide does meet the Genocide Convention criteria because the Khmer Rouge has harmed Cambodians. From Chan Pay’s testimony, they also have caused serious †bodily harm† by inserting bullets into her private areas. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo History and Implications

In September 1847, the Mexican-American War essentially ended when the American army captured Mexico City after the Battle of Chapultepec. With the Mexican capital city in American hands, diplomats took charge and over the course of a few months wrote up the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the conflict and ceded vast Mexican territories to the USA for $15 million and forgiveness of certain Mexican debts. It was a coup for the Americans, who gained a significant part of their current national territory, but a disaster for Mexicans who saw roughly half of their national territory given away. The Mexican-American War War broke out in 1846 between Mexico and the USA. There were many reasons why, but the most important were lingering Mexican resentment over the 1836 loss of Texas and the Americans desire for Mexicos northwestern lands, including California and New Mexico. This desire to expand the nation to the Pacific was referred to as Manifest Destiny. The USA invaded Mexico on two fronts: from the north through Texas and from the east via the Gulf of Mexico. The Americans also sent a smaller army of conquest and occupation into the western territories they wished to acquire. The Americans won every major engagement and by September of 1847 had pushed to the gates of Mexico City itself. The Fall of Mexico City: On September 13, 1847, the Americans, under the command of General Winfield Scott, took the fortress at Chapultepec and the gates to Mexico City: they were close enough to fire mortar rounds into the heart of the city. The Mexican army under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna abandoned the city: he would later try (unsuccessfully) to cut the American supply lines to the east near Puebla. The Americans took control of the city. Mexican politicians, who had previously stalled or rebuffed all American attempts at diplomacy, were ready to talk. Nicholas Trist, Diplomat Some months before, American President James K. Polk had sent diplomat Nicholas Trist to join General Scotts force, giving him authority to conclude a peace agreement when the time was right and informing him of the American demands: a huge chunk of Mexicos northwestern territory. Trist repeatedly tried to engage the Mexicans during 1847, but it was difficult: the Mexicans did not want to give away any land and in the chaos of Mexican politics, governments seemed to come and go weekly. During the Mexican-American War, six men would be President of Mexico: the presidency would change hands between them nine times. Trist Stays in Mexico Polk, disappointed in Trist, recalled him in late 1847. Trist got his orders to return to the USA in November, just as Mexican diplomats began seriously negotiating with the Americans. He was ready to go home when some fellow diplomats, including Mexican and British ones, convinced him that to leave would be a mistake: the fragile peace might not last the several weeks it would take a replacement to arrive. Trist decided to stay and met with Mexican diplomats to hammer out a treaty. They signed the pact in the Guadalupe Basilica in the town of Hidalgo, named for Mexicos founder Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, and which would give the treaty its name. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (the full text of which can be found in the links below) was nearly exactly what President Polk had asked for. Mexico ceded all of California, Nevada, and Utah and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado to the USA in exchange for $15 million dollars and forgiveness of about $3 million more in previous debt. The treaty established the Rio Grande as the border of Texas: this had been a sticky subject in previous negotiations. Mexicans and Native Americans living in those lands were guaranteed to keep their rights, properties, and possessions and could become US citizens after one year if they desired. Also, future conflicts between the two nations would be settled by arbitration, not war. It was approved by Trist and his Mexican counterparts on February 2, 1848. Approval of the Treaty President Polk was enraged by the refusal of Trist to abandon his duty: Nevertheless, he was pleased with the treaty, which gave him all that he had asked for. He passed it along to Congress, where it was held up by two things. Some northern Congressmen tried to add the Wilmot Proviso which would assure that the new territories did not allow slavery: this demand was later taken out. Other Congressmen wanted even more territory ceded in the agreement (some demanded all of Mexico!). Eventually, these Congressmen were outvoted and Congress approved the treaty (with a couple of minor changes) on March 10, 1848. The Mexican government followed suit on May 30 and the war was officially over. Implications of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a bonanza for the United States. Not since the Louisiana Purchase had so much new territory been added to the USA. It would not be long before thousands of settlers began making their way to the new lands. To make things even sweeter, gold was discovered in California shortly thereafter: the new land would pay for itself almost immediately. Sadly, those articles of the treaty which guaranteed the rights of Mexicans and Native Americans living in the ceded lands were often ignored by Americans moving west: many of them lost their lands and rights and some werent officially given citizenship until decades later. For Mexico, it was a different matter. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is a national embarrassment: the lowlight of a chaotic time when generals, politicians and other leaders put their own self-interests above those of the nation. Most Mexicans know all about the treaty and some are still angry about it. As far as theyre concerned, the USA stole those lands and the treaty just made it official. Between the loss of Texas and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico had lost 55 percent of its land in twelve years. Mexicans are right to be indignant about the treaty, but in reality, the Mexican officials at the time had little choice. In the USA, there was a small but vocal group that wanted much more territory than the treaty called for (mostly sections of northern Mexico that had been captured by General Zachary Taylor during the early part of the war: some Americans felt that by right of conquest those lands should be included). There were some, including several Congressmen, who wanted all of Mexico! These movements were well known in Mexico. Surely some Mexican officials who signed off on the treaty felt that they were in danger of losing much more by failing to agree to it. The Americans werent Mexicos only problem. Peasant groups all over the nation had taken advantage of the strife and mayhem to mount major armed revolts and insurrections. The so-called Caste War of Yucatan would claim the lives of 200,000 people in 1848: the people of Yucatan were so desperate that they begged the US to intervene, offering to willingly join the USA if they occupied the region and ended the violence (the US declined). Smaller revolts had broken out in several other Mexican states. Mexico needed to get the US out and turn its attention to this domestic strife. In addition, the western lands in question, such as California, New Mexico, and Utah, were already in American hands: they had been invaded and taken early in the war and there was a small but significant American armed force already in place there. Given that those territories were already lost, was it not better to at least gain some sort of financial reimbursement for them? Military reconquest was out of the question: Mexico had been unable to re-take Texas in ten years, and the Mexican Army was in tatters after the disastrous war. Jail and Prison One of the key cornerstones of the criminal justice system is the correctional system, specifically the correctional facilities. Prisons and jails are examples of correctional facilities that help keep the criminal justice system running smoothly and efficiently. Without these facilities, there would be no place for criminals to serve their sentences, and no one would really be safe. Although prison and jail seem to be interchangeable words, they actually mean two different types of correctional facilities. One type of violence that relates directly within the subculture of prison would be prison rape. More typical violence occurs within prison as well, and most of these fights occur when someone breaks the code of ethics within the subculture of prison. Probation and parole are two positive endings for a person who has been incarcerated. Violating the conditions of this agreement can result in the person being brought back into incarceration to serve the rest of their sentence. Parole is when a person is allowed a conditional, early release from their prison sentence. Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's plays about tragedy. It is about two lovers who commit suicide when their feuding famillies prevent them from being together. The play has many characters, each with its own role in keeping the plot line. Some characters have very little to do with the plot but some have the plot revolving around them. Friar Lawrence does not have very much time on stage but the time he does have is crucial to the plot line. Through his words Friar Lawrence demonstrates the he is a good intentioned, yet sometimes short-sighted, man who is not afraid to take risks to help others One of Friar Lawrences most favourable traits is how good intentioned he is. He may do something out of the ordinary if he thinks the outcome will help someone he cares for. For example, when he says "In one respect I'll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love."(Act 2, Scene 3), he is saying that the only reason he will marry Romeo and Juliet is because he hopes that the marriage will end the hostilities between the two houses. When he says "Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, and hither shall he come; and he and I shall watch thy waking, and that very night shall Romeo bear thee to Mantua." (Act 4, Scene 1), he tells Juliet how everything will be all right. Unfortunately, for all his good intentions the play still ends in tragedy. Friar Lawrence is a man who is not afraid to take risks when he feels it is neccesary to help someone. For example in Act 2, Scene 6, when he marries Romeo and Juliet, he is risking his reputation as a Friar so he can help the two lovers. Also, when he says "Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink though off;" (Act 4, Scene 1), he is suggesting that Juliet drink a potion so that she might feighn her own death and avoid marrying Paris. This is an extremely risky thing to do because anything might happen to Juliet while she unconscious. Even after all Friar did to help Romeo and Juliet the play still ended in tragedy because of Friar Lawrences' short sightedness. When the Friar married Romeo Juliet in secrecy, he did not think of all the complications that would arise but instead went on with the marriage because at that time he thought it was the right thing to do. In Act 4, Scene 1, he gave Juliet a sleeping potion without thinking of the possible outcomes of such an outrages plan. He admits that much of the fault of the tragedy lies in his hands when he says "And her I stand both to impeach and purge myself condemned and myself excused", and when he say "Her nurse is privy; and, if aught in this miscarried by myself..." (Act 5, Scene 3). Although Friar Lawrence does not have an especially large role, his role is none the less important. It is because of his good intentions that he was willing to help his friends that Romeo and Juliet were married - a key event in the play. It is because of his willingness to take risks for his friends that Juliet aqquired the sleeping potion - another key event in the play. Finally, it was the shortsightedness of his actions that in part led to the deaths of the two lead characters. This demonstartes that Friar Lawrence was a man who was a man with good intentions who was willing to take risks to help his frieneds. If he had been any other way, the play might not have turned out the way it did.

Ultimately, quips Gallagher, every video game should be an entertaining experience (2). On the other hand, it is true that some of the most popular video games are the violent ones. The reason why the market is flooded with violent games is that violence sells. People enjoy action-packed violent games most. It is rarely a matter of contention whether a game is violent or not. The contention arises regarding how violent the games actually are. In an interview with Dr. Craig Anderson, a leader in the current research on the various effects of prolonged exposure to violent computer and video games on aggressive behavior, the General Aggression Model was discussed at length. Dr. Anderson pointed out that he was motivated to research about aggression in video games by the work he did on the model as well as on media violence literature. Dr. Anderson pointed out that although there were hundreds of studies on aggression and violent video games, many questions remained unanswered. Students were looking for compelling and publishable research topics, and in this way, they were able to come up with many gaps in the literature. In the beginning, Dr. Anderson looked at priming issues in the context of media violence effects. However, after debating with cognitive psychologists, the researcher thought about modifying the Stroop test, although he chose to adopt reading reaction time tasks among participants. Dr. Anderson pointed out that many researchers in the media violence generally think that everyone who is high on trait aggression is influenced more by exposure to media violence than by anything else. In other words, the conviction among many scholars is that highly aggressive people are the ones who are most susceptible to the video games’ harmful effects. In the early years of video gaming, violence used to be cartoonish. In games such as Space Invaders and Wonder Boy, when a player killed an enemy, this would be shown by the unfortunate subject disappearing in a small explosion or a cloud of smoke and debris. At the time and with the technology that was current, these games were considered violent. Today, with improvements in technology, people no longer disappear in a cloud of smoke and debris. Today, enemies have to bleed before they die. The grotesque image of the corpse also has to appear, complete with a gunshot wound. A game such as Metal Gear Solid 2 portrays enemies performing elaborate maneuvers when a player shoots them. It is always thoroughly entertaining to shoot them at the limbs and to see them go limp, or to shoot at their radio, rendering it useless. Some people say that what has increased is the level of realism and not violence, since the aim has always been to shoot and kill anything that comes in one’s way. However, this very aspect of realism makes some forms of violence appear acceptable, for example, in Wonder Boy, and others unacceptable, for example, in Metal Gear Solid 2. Yet others do not notice any difference in various types of violence, insisting that violence of whatever nature brings about the same effect on society. Farrales highlights the views of General Everett Koop, a U.S. surgeon, who once claimed that home and arcade video games are among the top three reasons where there is family violence (4). There are many instances that would perfectly make Koop’s statement on the negative impact violent video games on behavior agreeable. However, there are also many instances that portray violence as having little or no any negative effects on the individuals playing them. Some kids play video games and end up becoming violent people. Others play them but do not become increasingly aggressive. These varying outcomes make it difficult for the effects of video violence on all players to be determined accurately. Meanwhile, the most undesirable aspects of violence in video games include lack of punishment for killing, constant killing and hurting of other people, and perpetual justification for killing other people. This situation makes players to start accepting killing as an acceptable means of solving problems. They are also made to believe that there is nothing wrong with violence. In other words, violence is desensitized, and players start seeing human beings as mere objects rather than human beings, thus drastically lowering their empathy levels. Of course older players can differentiate between fantasy and reality, but children cannot. Surprisingly, argues Anthes, these older people are affected by video games as well, though not in the same way as kids. Among kids, the violence contained in video games leads to increase in aggression. A common effect of video games is to make players developed abnormally high adrenaline rates, which may result to hyper-aggressiveness together with the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder. Increase in adrenaline rates leads to stimulus addiction, a common response among children who are often immersed in violent video games. People who suffer from stimulus addiction require stimulation that is increasingly strong in order to attain the same emotional experience. Sometimes, this search for stimulation leads them so go looking for more violent video games. Meanwhile, the question of whether video games result in violence in the real world remains unanswered. Many parents are worried that violent games will not only bring about restlessness in their children, they will make them more violent their behavior as well. Farrales points out to the research that was done in 1998 on a group of children aged between 5 and 7 years (9). In this study, the children were observed to imitate during free play whatever they had experienced in video games. Children who had played games with violent themes were aggressive, while those who played active, nonviolent games reflected their experiences in their play. The level of stimulation in both cases appeared to be more profound in girls than in boys. This could be because, generally, males are exposed to violence more, making a significant increase in aggression to be more profound in females. Unlike TV or movies, which present a predominantly passive viewing experience, violent video games require an individual to shoot, stab, rob, and kill enemies actively. With a movie, even if one was to watch it several times, some additional details may be obtained but it is fundamentally about the same thing. With a video game, many things can be changed according to one’s way of thinking, level of play, and dexterity in pressing the control buttons. Fernandez points out that Cho Seung-Hui, a student who killed 32 people at the Virginia Tech Campus back in 2007, is reported to have been played video games obsessively, and many commentators have been instinctively linking game violence with the killings in the campus. Claims of Cho Seung-Hui’s stint with obsessive video games were debunked by the campus panel that investigated the killings. The obvious problem with the desensitization claim made on video games after the Virginia Tec incident is that millions of adults and kids play violent video games every day and they never engage in any violent behavior. In fact, during the past decade when video games have surged in popularity, violence by youth has declined. According to a study that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention released, the number of school killings reduced considerably between 1992 and 2006. However, this is not where the debate ends. Although video games may not directly result in school shootings, it is undoubtedly strongly linked with aggressive feelings. Those who are opposed to computer and video games would want to see them censored. These people cite many reasons for their stance. They insist that over-dependence on video games fosters social isolation, since in some cases the games are played alone. They also point out that women are portrayed as the weaker sex, sexually provocative and always helpless. Moreover, game environments are always based on gender bias, aggression and plots of violence. Additionally, video games have inspired criticism because of the way in which they fail to provide actions that require creativity and independent thought. Instead, they confuse fantasy with reality. In most of these games, there is no alternative route to winning other than being a violent player. Furthermore, not surprisingly, academic achievement tends to be negatively related to the overall time that is spent playing computer and video games. Anand indicates that there is a correlation between use of video games and academic performance, if the grade-point average (GPA) and scholastic aptitude tests (SAT) on students who use video game are anything to go by (555). According to Anand’s study, there is a negative correlation between the time spent by student playing video games and the student’s SAT and GPA scores. The research findings presented by Anand suggest that video and computer games could be having a detrimental effect on the GPA of the individual, and possibly, on SAT scores as well. Although the results portray statistical dependence, it still remains rather difficult to prove a cause-and-effect relationship. This difficulty arises from the complex nature of academic performance as well as student life. In a New York Times article published on the November 15, 2010 edition, the question of whether stores should sell violent video games to minors was raised. Indeed, the question was not of the article writer’s own making, it was being debated by the Supreme Court in an attempt to determine what the writers of the Bill of Rights would have thought about a violent video game like Postal 2. In the New York Times Article, Adam Liptak wrote that the justices struggled to define the manner in which the First Amendment ought to apply to video games. A suggestion was made on the imposition of a $1,000 fine on all stores that continue to sell violent video comes to minors. The violence in the computer games, according to the Supreme Court, is characterized by acts of killing, dismembering, maiming, and sexually assaulting a human being’s image, in a manner that is ‘patently offensive, lacks serious artistic, scientific, political or literary value’, and appeals to the deviant and morbid interests of minors. In summary, the cons of video games by far outweigh the pros. There is a need for these games to be regulated, particularly with regard to access by minors.
